Black Crowes Tour Dates

Woo! Note the Oct. 6 date at the Ryman. That reminds me - Keane is playing next month. Maybe Chris wants to go.

Surprisingly (?), Fark hates the Black Crowes

I had a bunch of stuff I was going to say here, but then I decided not to. That's pretty much how it goes.

Audioscrobbler has turned into Last FM - same great stats, now with a bunch of new optional crap you can pay for. It's worth it to keep track of exactly how many times you had that embarrassing Styx song on repeat.

Analogy of the day: BitTorrents are like communism - great in theory, stupid in practice. The entire system is based on letting people suck up your bandwidth after you've already got the files you wanted, and nobody does that. Well, I guess some people do, but those people are suckers.

What is wrong with the world?

Hilary Duff has a #1 album. It's a freakin' compilation. The best tracks from ... her first 2 records.

Let's think about this. 208,000 copies were sold this week. I weep for the people who bought them.

Brad Paisley/Mariah Carey: This is acceptable. I can understand why people might want to buy these records. 302,000 total, so that makes me feel better about this Hilary thing.

NOW! That's What I Call Music? Stupid. 108,000 copies. I'll pretend they were bought to play at parties or as gifts for that person who has everything.

311: Never understood the appeal of these guys. Reggae rock from Omaha? But I'll take them over most of this other crap. 91,000 copies.

Black-Eyed Peas: Eh. I guess they aren't so bad. 82,000 copies.

Faith Hill/Kelly Clarkson/Young Jeezy: 196,000 total. I don't really care about any of these artists, but I give mad props to Young Jeezy for having the courage to go out on stage with a name like that. It's almost a cop-out rap name, because you can rhyme any of the "eezy" words with it. F'sheezy.

Killers "Hot Fuss" Limited Edition: The people that bought this are definitely suckers, because the bonus tracks are just one track from the British release and two B-sides. That's it. No new material. Makes me wonder if they've already tanked. 60,000 copies.

Click Five: Don't know 'em, don't care for 'em, just found out they're Berklee grads, so they can cram it. 52,000 copies.

Taproot sucks. Silverstein has a stupid name. Aly and AJ can also cram it.

Total worthless records bought this week: 1,099,000.
Average price of one worthless record: $12 (this is a conservative estimate)
Total money wasted on worthless records this week: $13,188,000

That, my friends, is a potential gold mine. All I have to do is make a record good enough to edge out all that crap. And get it promoted, and distributed. And work up a live show to take on the road.

(Anyone else ever wonder why record sales are always in nice round numbers?)

I knew it...

Payola is alive and well

Stupid to think they'll ever get rid of it, but it's worth fighting.

Woohoo!

New Nada Surf record on 9/12/05 - "Do It Again" is from the new record and it sounds great

The weirdest Beck song you will ever hear (this is only up for a week, so don't blame me if you miss it)

If you're interested, I've posted all the pictures from my recent trip to London. I also managed to post the ones from my trip to NYC a year and a half ago. Click the link on the right called "Sharkdog Photos" to see them.

Several weird things happened to me today. First of all, I went to the gym for the fourth day in a row. Secondly, this Rob Thomas song comes on and I don't even recognize his voice without all that Matchbox Twenty gravel in it. But the track just bumps ... man, I don't know what's wrong with me, why I like this song so much, but I do. I've always thought he was a good songwriter, but man! "What if we were symphonies?" Dumbest line ever. Coolest line ever. This is what pop is supposed to be.

Then, tonight, "12 Monkeys" comes on TV. That movie is nuts. Lots of great stuff going on. And, as always, IMDB delivers with trivia and even a recommendation. Something tells me I'm going to be watching a lot of Terry Gilliam movies in the near future.

I love the bongos(I think they're bongos) at the beginning of "Lonely No More". That's a great song. I like his newest song, "This is how a heart breaks" too. I'm surprised you hadn't heard it earlier. oh wait, you don't listen to top 40 stations.

I'm always slightly surprised when that song comes on and I realize each time that it's Rob Thomas. I still listen to You or someone like you from time to time.

I've heard about Terry Gilliam, man. Brazil. That other one. Yeah, I saw parts of 12 Monkeys once. Wanna see his new one: The Brothers Grimm.

Something worthwhile on CNN, for once:

Judge rules in favor of CBGB's

The rise of the independent artist

Being what I thought was a responsible car-owner, I took apart my brakes yesterday to investigate a severe grinding sound. There was absolutely no question in my mind that something was terribly wrong with them, so I was prepared to replace them. Imagine my surprise when they turned out to be fine - we searched for hours and found nothing wrong. I was going to take it one step further and replace a wheel bearing today when suddenly the grinding noise stopped. It's gone.

Enough to drive a responsible car-owner nuts. Now, what does this thingy do?

Back in the old U.S.A. Yessir. No more of that sissy England stuff for me. I already had a real cheeseburger today. I also got my free annual credit report from each of the 3 reporting agencies. No, it's not a scam, you're entitled to one free report a year. And if you live in the Southeast, you can get yours right now.*

What else? London was great. I'll have pictures up within the next day or two. We've got big things in store, including an actual implementation of the Stateside Menace, with real musicians!

I'm reading A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. It is good.
