Being what I thought was a responsible car-owner, I took apart my brakes yesterday to investigate a severe grinding sound. There was absolutely no question in my mind that something was terribly wrong with them, so I was prepared to replace them. Imagine my surprise when they turned out to be fine - we searched for hours and found nothing wrong. I was going to take it one step further and replace a wheel bearing today when suddenly the grinding noise stopped. It's gone.

Enough to drive a responsible car-owner nuts. Now, what does this thingy do?
