As an addendum to this, my research professor totally took me to town on the paper I turned in (the one I posted previously). The format was all wrong, and he just tore apart a lot of the assumptions I made. Then he went on to give me 23/25. I think that's the best way to do things - tell your students every little thing they did wrong, and then give them a grade based on their overall effort and accomplishments. Hammond did that too, although he could have been completely arbitrary in his grading. I could never tell for sure.
